Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) Class II work in the Blizard Institute:

The GMO (Class II) laboratory, LG09, is located in the south west corner of the Blizard Institute. It is specifically designed to fulfil the Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) Regulations 2000, control measures that limit contact between GMO and humans and the environment to ensure a high level of safety. All work using GMO must be risk assessed by the College Genetic Modification Safety Committee (CGMSC). No work shall commence until a risk assessment of the proposed work has been completed, submitted to and approved by the CGMSC. The College GMO risk assessment document can be found here:

College GMO risk assessment

The CGMSC assess class of activity and hence containment level. All work classified as Class II will be carried out in LG09. If the CGMSC determine that the work needs to be notified to the HSE then a fee is payable and will require the completion of the HSE CU.2 form which can be downloaded from:

https://www.hse.gov.uk/forms/genetic/index.htm

Access to the laboratory will be via your access card which will be 'activated' after the assessment and approval of your work via the CGMSC and signing of the Local Rules of the laboratory.
